Herbs For Diseases Of The Urogenital System

Prescription For Nephritis

Strategy

Treat conventionally until the patient is stable in acute conditions. Treat the underlying etiology if known  (infectious, immune complexes, etc.). Consider ACE inhibitors and conventional renal support, appropriate diet therapy, and thromboxane and PAF inhibitors.

Use alcohol or glycetract tinctures for best results; alternatively, use teas.

Astragalus: Immune enhancing, cardiotonic, diuretic, hypotensive; 1 part.

Dong guai: Blood tonic, circulatory stimulant, vasodilator; 1 part.

Siberian ginseng: Immune modulating, adaptogen; 1 part.

Hawthorn: Hypotensive, vasodilator, antioxidant, cardiotonic; 1 part.

Ginkgo: Inhibits platelet activating factor, antioxidant, circulatory stimulant; 1 part.

For tinctures, give 1 ml per 10 pounds twice daily in food. For teas, give one-fourth cup per 10 pounds twice daily in food.

Consider using Cordyceps as well: Dried herb, 25 to 100 mg / kg divided daily if extracted and dried; triple or quadruple dose for unprocessed herb; tincture, 1:2 to 1:3: 0.5 to 2 mL per 10 kg (20 pounds) divided daily and diluted or combined with other herbs.

Chinese herbal formulas including Rehmannia 6 and Rehmannia 8 are also useful.

Prescription For Cystitis

Strategy

Golden rod: Anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, diuretic, carminative; 1 part.

Echinacea: Immune stimulant, antiinflammatory, vulnery, antimicrobial; 1 part.

For tinctures, give 1 ml per 10 pounds twice daily in food. For teas, give one-fourth cup per 10 pounds twice daily in food.

Add Bearberry (Arcbostapbylos uva-ursi)(urinary antiseptic, astringent). Treat for 3 weeks, then take 1 week off, and repeat. Dose: Infusion, 5 to 30 gm per cup of water, administered at a rate of one-fourth to one-half cup per 10 kg (20 pounds) divided daily; tincture, 1:2 to 1:3 : 1 to 2 mL per 10 kg (20 pounds) divided daily or combined with other herbs.

Prescription For Flutd / Ic Support

Strategy

Consider treatment adjunctive to or instead of conventional treatment, depending on the severity and recurrence rate. Give moist diets only to increase water turnover. Consider a source of glycosaminoglycans and consider feline pheromones to reduce stress and ensure litter box hygiene. Anti-inflammatory herbs may be beneficial in treating cats with chronic interstitial cystitis; pain-relieving herbs may also help. Consider anxiolytic herbs or amitriptyline. Demulcents may be beneficial. Use alcohol or glycetract tinctures for best results; alternatively, use teas.

Marshmallow: Demulcent, vulnery, diuretic; 1 part.

Saw palmetto: Diuretic, spasmolytic, anabolic; 1 part.

Bilberry: Antioxidant, astringent, antiinflammatory; 1 part.

Crataeva: Bladder tonic, antiinflammatory, antilithic; 1 part.

St. John’s wort or Kava kava: Nervine tonic, antiinflammatory, vulnery; 1 part.

For tinctures, give 1 ml per 10 pounds twice daily in food. For teas, give one-fourth cup per 10 pounds twice daily in food.

Prescription For Urinary Incontinence Support

Strategy

Treat the underlying etiology if known (chiropractic, acupuncture may help). Improve bladder and sphincter tone. Prevent infection and urolithiasis. Consider Cranberry capsules to help deodorize urine and help prevent infection. Use alcohol or glycetract tinctures for best results; alternatively, use teas.

Crataeva: Bladder tonic, antiinflammatory, antilithic; 2 parts.

Chaste tree: Regulates female hormonal activity, dopa-minergic; 1 part.

OR

Saw palmetto: Diuretic, spasmolytic, anabolic; 1 part.

Marshmallow: Demulcent, vulnery, diuretic; 1 part.

Bilberry: Antioxidant, astringent, antiinflammatory; 1 part.

Meadowsweet: Mild urinary antiseptic, antiinflammatory, mildly diuretic, antiulcerogenic, astringent; 1 part.

Prescription For Urolithiasis Support

Strategy

Identify composition of uroliths and implement appropriate conventional treatment if needed (surgical removal may be required). Increase water intake, using broths and moist food. Implement an appropriate diet if needed. Struvite can be managed medically; initiate herbs to prevent cystitis. Consider the underlying metabolic disorder or infection. The goal of herbal therapy is to minimize recurrence by minimizing infection or urolith formation. Use alcohol or glycetract tinctures for best results; alternatively, use teas.

Fenugreek: Demulcent, laxative, contains saponins; 1 part.

Urate

Dandelion: Diuretic, laxative, chologogue; 1 part.

Echinacea: Immune stimulant, vulnery, antiinflammatory, antimicrobial; 1 part.

For tinctures, give 1 ml per 10 pounds twice daily in food. For teas, give one-fourth cup per 10 pounds twice daily in food.
