Inula helenium L. (Asteraceae)

The root contains sesquiterpene lactones, mainly helenalin (alantolactone or elecampane camphor), isohelenalin, dihydroalantolactone, alantic acid, azulene and a large amount of inulin. Phytosterols including beta- and γ-sitosterols, stigma-sterol and friedelin are also present.

Use and indications

Elecampane is used as an expectorant, antitussive and antiseptic, especially for catarrh and dry irritating cough in children.
