Constituents
The major active components of skullcap are the flavonoids scutellarin, scutellarein, baicalein, baicalin (the glucuronide of baicalein), dihydrobaicalin, apigenin, luteolin and other methoxyflavones. The iridoid catalpol, and gamma-amino-benzoic acid (GABA) have also been found and there is a small amount of essential oil present composed of monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes.
Use and indications
Skullcap has been used traditionally as a sedative and to treat nervous disorders. Previous reports about its possible toxicity have been found to be because of contamination with Teucrium species; skullcap itself is now considered to be safe to use.
